Dm Presentation For Congress.pptx |
Here is my Powerpoint Presentation for the 2012 World Congress that I did not share. It does not contain my notes. At the time, I was advised by some members of the health panel that there were some attendees present that may cause conflict or disruption with my presentation and I was not prepared at the time to address this. I do have many regrets that I did not just present despite this, and dealt with the repercussions during the question period that followed.
I realize now that the argument that would be brought forward, 'how can veterinarians diagnose DM in dogs that have not undergone necropsy?’ has little to no affect on my presentation. The fact of the matter is, that many diseases go unofficially diagnosed without an autopsy, a good example is Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is also one that is diagnosed based on symptoms, clinical tests, physical examination, health history and ruling out of other disease/condition. Like DM, it can only be 100% confirmed with an autopsy. Alzheimer’s disease is something that has greatly impacted my family and husband’s family. If I were to give a presentation on Alzheimer’s, and someone stood up and said, “how are you sure that said person indeed has Alzheimer’s if they haven’t undergone autopsy” I think that they would be raked over the coals.
I feel that I had let down the audience, but most importantly, let down my DOG by not giving my presentation. Although I knew that I had the support and backing of many people present, and for that I will be forever grateful, I was not prepared emotionally to deal with those people that would feel it necessary to object to my opinions and to the facts that I wanted to bring foreword. I will never forget the air of disappointment in the audience when it was announced that I wouldn't be presenting.
I hope that others will feel compelled to speak publicly about something that they are passionate about, without fear or reservations of having to defend themselves against those who may object.
